Mantra Sādhana and Pūjā of Medicine Buddha (Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha), based on the Namchö treasure cycle of Vajrayāna Buddhism.
According to Mahāyāna Sūtras taught by Śākyamuni Buddha, Bhaiṣajyaguru, the Buddha of Healing, abides in the pure realm of Vaiḍūryaprabha (Radiance of Lapis Lazuli). He made profound vows and aspirations while traversing the Way of Bodhisattvas to his awakening. By the power of this, his enlightened activity brings blessings to heal illness, pacify suffering, and support both physical and mental well-being. By remembering his name and meditating upon his mantra, we experience that blessing.
Many healing traditions originate from the blessings of Medicine Buddha. Medical lineage of the Buddhist tradition too originate from the Medicine Buddha, such as the four Tantras of Medicine Buddha. The mantra of Medicine Buddha was prevalent in our land in ancient times through the medicinal text of Ashtanga Samgraha of Vagbhata.
In Vajrayāna, Medicine Buddha is also visualized as a devatā (state of divine perfection), as a pure expression of our own innate Buddha-nature. Through mantra and meditation, one can pacify afflictive emotions, harmonize the tridoṣas, experience the healing touch of blessings, and enrich the ability of our body and mind to heal from unhealthy conditions. This practice benefits not only oneself but can also be dedicated to the healing of others.
